Hearing Silences
The Black women faculty experience at Northwestern University has been invisible – until now. With your financial help, a documentary highlighting these women’s contributions will be completed.
In October 2021, former School of Education Professor Diana Slaughter Kotzin, Ph.D. (first tenured Black woman in SESP and the Constance E. Clayton Professor Emerita of the University of Pennsylvania) spearheaded the launch of this film about the history and experiences of Black women academics at NU.
The following have agreed to participate:
- Nichole Pinkard
- Kathleen Bethel
- Charla Burlenda Wilson
- Heather W Pinkett
- Toni Marie Montgomery
- Mara Brock Akil
- Alice Palmer
- Melissa Foster
- Kathleen Hagerty
- Leslie Harris
- Diana Slaughter Kotzin
- Ava Thompson Greenwell
- Mary Pattillo
- Sandra Richards
- Carol Lee
Dr. Kotzin challenged the production staff to explore the differences these pioneering women made collectively and the personal sacrifices the early hires made to “soldier on and demonstrate resilience in advancing Northwestern’s mission…”
Your financial contribution will help finish the film.
